Q :  I read that the flu vaccine is different from the strains people are catching.  Why should I get a flu vaccine if the strain has already mutated?

A: Some believe that by vaccinating healthy children and adults that a type of “herd immunity” will occur.  They also believe that this going to protect the ones that are unable to get the vaccine.  According to information presented at the May 2003 National Influenza Summit , almost 85% of Americans aged 20-50 and 66% aged 50-64 decide not to subject themselves to the vaccine. Have their been raging epidemics due to the lack of flu vaccinations?  NO!!  Drugs don't prevent disease, people do.  The risk of the new flu vaccine which is sprayed in one's nose actually has the potential to cause the most severe flu epidemic in years.  Why? The new vaccine will be carried by large chain stores like Wal-Mart.  All it takes is a vaccinated person to sneeze or to wipe their nose with their hand, etc. and the virus is spread into the air.  It is contraindicated for people who are immunocompromised, so if you live with someone that falls into this category and you get the nasal vaccine, you are putting your loved one at risk. The bottom line?  It is now recognized that if an individual had 5 consecutive flu shots between 1970-1980 their chances of getting Alzheimer's Disease is 10 TIMES HIGHER!  I know that my family and I are not going to be one of these statistics in the future, are you?

Q: My doctor recommended that I come in to get a flu shot with my family.  I know how you feel about vaccinations, so I wanted to get your opinion.  Should I subject myself and my children to it?
Brookfield

A: First I think I should explain how the flu virus actually starts and spreads. Although it passes from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or contact with respiratory fluids, it actually starts in wild aquatic birds.  These migratory birds circulate the disease throughout the world acting as the carrier.  Then an intermediate host contracts the virus by drinking the water contaminated with the bird's feces.  Swine are known to contain receptors for both bird and human viruses, so they fit the part perfectly.  Here the viruses mutate to a dangerous form to humans.  Most Americans are under the false assumption that the flu shot will take care of a flu breakout.  Viruses such as these are constantly mutating.  How is the vaccine made?  Basically, by picking three strains that are most likely to cause epidemics and combining them.  The vaccine manufactures are taking a crap shoot.  Why?  VIRUSES MUTATE and change!  You already know the dangers with the additives in the shots, so why inject them into your system?  There are two choices, wait and see what happens, or, since orthodox medicine is making very little progress at finding a solution, you must reach out to self-help solutions.  Your immune system keeps you one hundred percent you!  It recognizes and destroys anything that‘s not supposed to be in you.  A healthy immune system means high resistance to disease and infection, better ability to deal with stress, and greater health and well-being.  You and your child deserve the chance to live a healthy, drug free life, do not deny them!

Q: My child has been diagnosed with Scoliosis.  I had the same condition and it was never taken care of correctly.  As a result, I have chronic pain.  What exactly is scoliosis and how can it be taken care of?
Alice , New Milford

A:  Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine.  It can usually be detected by a spine specialist, such as a Chiropractor, by an evaluation of the spine and a person's shoulder and hip heights.  Sometimes clothing will not fit the way it should, such as uneven pant leg lengths.  The condition most commonly is correctable in children.  Their spines grow until they are about 25 years old. PROPER check-ups with a spine specialist are crucial! When adjustments are given their spines have time to develop normally so they do not progress into a more serious condition.  The goal of improving the spine's overall movement and flexibility can only be attained with spinal adjustments.  After attaining this goal, specific exercises and stretches are important.  But they will not be effective is the spine is growing in a sideways curve.  There is no reason your child should have developed the curvature in the first place.  Having children checked as infants is critical in their development.  They should be checked with every growth spurt.  How do you expect their nervous systems to develop and function properly if you do not have them checked by a specialist?  You stated that you have chronic pain, and that is not normal!  You child deserves the chance to live a healthy life, do not deny them!

Q :  Now that school has started, I'm afraid my daughter's ear infections and tonsillitis are going to start up again.  I am very concerned over new reports and the dangers of drug effects on children.  Can you shed some light on this for me?

A:  You should be concerned.  A recent study in the journal “Pediatrics” analyzed over 7,000 reports on adverse reactions reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The results are frightening. Included in the list are the abused drugs ibuprofen and acetaminophen.   The study also states that drugs linked to side effects could be deadly.  Sadly, 25% of the cases where death resulted were from drugs that were administered to the mother and passed along to the child in utero or during breastfeeding.  The worst part of the study reported that only 10% of the actual total serious complications from drugs might be reported, based on FDA data.  The use of antibiotics carries many consequences.  The effects are well known from GI discomfort, including diarrhea and vomiting, to allergic reactions, to the creation of super resistant bacteria.  If a child has a repeated infection, there is an obvious disturbance in the ability of their body's natural defenses.  Our bodies are not lacking drugs.  We were not born with any in us.  The human body is designed to fight its own battles against germs.  The problem lies in the body's  inability to function properly, not its lack of drugs.  The nerves that control these functions travel through your spine.

Q: Now that summer is here, I am spending a lot of time swimming in the Lake . The problem is that the next day I wake up with my head so congested I cannot breathe. Can you help?
“ Lake Head ”
- Brookfield

A: This is a common complaint. First, let me discuss this on a cellular level. If all of the cells in your body are functioning like they are supposed to be, do you think that this would be an issue? You need to uncover the CAUSE of your concern, not merely cover them up with drugs. Chiropractic health care is based on the scientific fact that our nervous systems control the function of EVERY cell in our bodies and every nerve in the body runs through the spinal column. Interference in the nervous system resulting from spinal misalignment affects how the nervous system relates to the cells to which it travels. The body is a designed to heal itself given the right opportunity and circumstances. Promoting the healing and correcting the misalignment is my job, and with guidance your body then does the rest. So, “lake head” should be avoidable if your body is restored to normal or maximal function. Sadly, many are unaware of what a life changing experience chiropractic care can do for their quality of life. Congratulations on taking the first step on taking control over your body's needs!

Q: Headaches and migraines are taking over my life!  I am on medications that barely touch the pain.  I would like to find out the cause of the pain and take care of it, instead of trying to numb it with the drugs.  Can you help me?
- New Milford

A: Although most people will experience a headache in their lifetime, it is NOT NORMAL to have them on a consistent basis.  Furthermore, headaches and migraines are commonly caused by non-systemic conditions.  This means that it is a spinal condition.  A study published in Emergency Medicine Clinics of America states that over 50 million people in the US suffer from headaches!  They are shown to be a major cause of suffering and missed work.  Also, it was shown that it is one of the most common reasons people consult a Doctor.  In my practice, I see that headaches and migraines are most commonly caused by emotional and physical tension.  When the vertebrae in the neck are not in their correct alignment, the muscles spasm and cause physical tension.   Can you imagine trying to balance a bowling ball on a stick?  That is what you do all day every day with your head.  If your neck has lost its natural curve, its natural shock absorbing ability is diminished.  So, you are balancing on a stick rather than a spring, like it should be.  After the curve is lost, the muscles tire easily because this is not what they are designed to do.  I suggest that you owe it to yourself and your family to be evaluated for the cause of your headaches.  Since you've already taken the riskiest route, it is time for you to take the natural route.  The only thing you have to lose is your pain!

Q: I have been told that I need surgery for my back pain. The doctors I am seeing are surgeons, and have no other suggestions. Can you help me?
-KH

A: Don't rush off to go under the knife so quickly! Educate yourself first. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that surgery is overused for the treatment of back pain! In the United States , the rate for surgery is forty percent higher than any other country. That statistic alone shows how we overuse something for that quick fix. The fact is, surgery does not always improve the symptoms and very often I see conditions being worsened. There are many options when considering conservative, non-surgical treatments for neck and back pain. Chiropractic leads the way in research related to the conservative treatment of back pain. “Spinal Manipulation is the most commonly used conservative treatment for back pain supported by the most research evidence of effectiveness in terms of early results and long-term effectiveness. Doctors of Chiropractic have been shown to treat two times as many back pain patients as medical doctors for thirty percent of the cost!! Moreover, health plans that cover Chiropractic show lower hospital admission rates, lower inpatient payments and lower total healthcare costs. It does not take a scientist to see that chiropractic care is no longer just an alternative treatment, but it is a vital and integral part of our health care system.

Many people have been coming into our office commenting on how many children we see.  This is the 2 nd segment on “How Can Chiropractic Help My Child?”  With all of the allergies and infections as well as ADD/ADHD around parents ask us this question daily.  The following is a summary of why we have a high pediatric practice with healthier children coming in everyday.

Toddler hood through childhood is a very active time.  Most falls and accidents are part of normal childhood development.  How many times do you remember falling as a child? At times, normal falls can cause spinal and nerve damaging spinal problems that create serious long term consequences.  Your children may have bones that are not aligned properly in their spines and NOT EVEN KNOW!!!  Only 6% of the body's nervous system perceives pain.  That is why they need to have periodic spinal checkups.  Just as you have your child's teeth, hearing and vision checked, you need to not deprive them of a spinal checkup.  It could be one of the most important checkups your child will ever have!  Why is it so important?  Because many chiropractic families report having more energy, improved health and less dependency on drugs and medications.   We commonly hear parents state that since getting under our care; their children get sick less frequently and severely.  This includes behavioral and emotional improvements such as hyperactivity, autism, anxiety, low mental stamina, asthma and discipline problems.  Being free of blockages to the flow of energy and information over their nervous system can make a big difference in your child's physical, mental and emotional health.  More and more families are finding that periodic chiropractic spinal checkups for their children make a big difference in their child's health.  Why not include chiropractic checkups as part of your family's health care?

Q:  I have pain in my left shoulder, arm and hand.  This causes many problems in completing my daily activities.  Can Chiropractic help me?

A:  Old injuries, even stress from birth, can cause spinal nerve damage that contributes to arm, shoulder and hand pain.  The brain talks to the rest of the body through a vast communication system of nerves passing through your spinal column.  There is a bundle of nerves called the brachial plexus and it supplies the arm, shoulder, wrist, hand and fingers with the impulses they need to function.  From brachial plexus injuries to carpal tunnel, Chiropractic's success with the shoulder, arm, wrist and hands is well documented.  The approach, as with any health problem, is for the Doctor of Chiropractic to analyze your spine to locate and correct a serious nerve damaging spinal conditions.  The weight of a dime can impede nerve function by 60%.  Nerve function is essential for physical and neurological health.  Unless a dysfunctional nervous system is corrected, many health conditions will not be able to complete a normal healing process.

Q: I am suffering from horrible allergies.  Can Chiropractic help your immune system?
Jennifer Mitchell, Brookfield , CT

A: Yes! Your immune system works with your nervous system around the clock to help keep your body working at its optimal potential.  It patrols every function attacking and destroying useless and dangerous cells.   An unhealthy immune system can overreact as in allergic reactions, immune deficiency disorders, chronic fatigue, etc. Doctors of chiropractic analyze your spine to locate the area of vertebral misalignment, a serious condition that causes spinal distortions and interferes with your nervous system function.  Many years of chiropractic and osteopathic observations have demonstrated that spinal care improves immune function.  It is important for proper internal organ function.  Along with nutrition and exercise, keeping your spine healthy under chiropractic care is one of the best ways of keeping your immune system functioning at its optimum level so you can remain healthy!

March 14, 2006:

Q:  Every time I shovel, I get a terrible back ache.  Since you are a back expert, do you have any suggestions?

A:    You have consulted the proper authority!  The following advice can help to decrease your chances of exposing your body to pain and more serious injury.  Most injuries from snow shoveling have been shown to come from twisting or bending from the waist.  When you start to lift and throw the snow overexertion can cause muscle fatigue.  According to the CCC, it is recommended that warm up exercises be done first.  Do not lift the snow with your back.  Lift and throw the snow properly, using both arms and body in coordination as you scoop the snow and deposit it to the side, being sure to shovel to both sides of the area.  Bend from your knees and try to keep the spine as straight as possible.  Handle minimal to moderate amounts at a time, pushing the snow with a shovel (when practical) with a handle long enough to keep you from bending while pushing.  Rest frequently and pace yourself, and do not shovel if you are not in good condition or have existing back problems.   The spine handles a big load while shoveling and an even bigger load if you shovel improperly.  Do not forget that this can also impact the heart.  “Exertion and frigid air can combine to create a double burden on the cardiovascular system”, according to the CCC.

Q:  I am very concerned over the hype over the small pox vaccine.  I have heard you speak on vaccinations, and wondered if you could inform me on what is in a vaccine?
E.S., Brookfield

A:    I am very cautious to answer your question.  Vaccination of our youth is something I lecture on frequently.  I have yet to conquer the smallpox question.  Dr. Ted Koren is a well known voice for vaccine information.  I do a lot of my research with his journals.  The following is a list (an ugly list) of what is in a vaccine.  Ammonium sulfate (salt);  This is suspected for GI, liver, nerve and respiratory system poison.  Beta-propiolactone is known to cause cancer and is also a poison to certain organs.  Genetically modified yeast, animal, bacterial and viral DNA; Can cause unknown genetic mutations.  Latex rubber; can cause life threatening allergic reactions.  MSG; A neurotoxin, mutagenic and teratogenic.  Aluminum; Implicated as a cause of brain damage, suspected in Alzheimer's, ementia, seizures and comas.  Formaldehyde; major constituent of embalming fluid, poisonous if ingested.  Micro-organisms; live and killed viri and bacteria or thieir toxins.  Polysorbate 80; known to cause cancer in animals.  Tri(n)butinformation.

Q:  I have had a very stressful year. I am worried that my stress level will affect my health. What exactly controls my health from your point of view?
C.R., Brookfield

A:  Let's start with the definition of Health. The World Health Organization defines it as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and NOT merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Basically, normal body function equals a healthy life. The key to achieving normal body function is the question here. The main communication center of our body is the central nervous system and controls EVERY function of your body including the three types of stress your body endures: Chemical, Emotional and Physical. It is really simple, if communication is disturbed, the brain and body will not have the ability to communicate. This can cause a decline in your health. When you are stressed, your self- healing and self-regulating body does not adapt properly. The fact is, most people don't think of the three types of stress as causing serious disease. Since most diseases are silent killers, I would hope that we would want to take care of our central nervous system! Coronary heart disease is the single largest killer of American male. The sad part is 57% of men who die suddenly have had NO previous symptoms of heart disease. Remember that your health is a journey, and only you can guide it through the future.

Q:  Why should I continue with chiropractic maintenance care if I have no pain?
John, New Milford

A:  Maintenance Care, sometimes referred to as Wellness Care, is the most important phase of Chiropractic Care.  Do you know that 75% of your healing takes place after the pain is gone?  Many patients have no complaints, but need to have their spines checked for Vertebral Subluxations and then adjusted to maintain proper body function to achieve optimal health.  (I may need to remind some of my readers that Subluxations are basically spinal bones that are not aligned properly therefore putting pressure on the nerves and decreasing nerve function). If you have a spinal joint that has decreased movement or is not in alignment, the degenerative process is only one week away!  How does a subluxation exist without any symptoms occurring?  Simple, oftentimes the misalignment of the joint does not produce pain.  In fact, only 6% of your nervous system DOES perceive pain.  This is analogous to when you have a cavity in your tooth.  Often you do not feel immediate pain from the cavity and when you do the degeneration has caused a large amount of damage to your tooth.  Chiropractors are concerned about keeping the body functioning at its optimal potential and to be as healthy as possible for Life.

December 16, 2006:

Q:   I was told that I have spinal degeneration.  What exactly is this and how can I take care of it without taking medications? Can this degeneration be reversed?
-Susan, Brookfield

A:  In a healthy spine, proper spinal curves permit normal turning and bending.  Openings between joints allow the nerves to exit the spine without interference.  The edges are smooth and well defined as well as the disc spacing.  In order to keep the spine healthy, regular spinal checkups with your Chiropractor are recommended for early detection and prevention of spinal decay.  We call this Wellness Care.  Loss of normal curves and misalignments will change the spine's range of motion.  The result is decreased muscle and ligament strength.  Pain and other obvious symptoms may not be present yet.  This is phase one of degeneration.    The spine can be expected to return to near normal with appropriate spinal alignment.  Years of calcium deposition and changing of bone shape will become visible in phase two of spinal degeneration.  Bone spurs develop and malfunctioning joints may attempt to fuse.  Joint instability is coupled with nerve irritation and disc degeneration.  Slowing or stopping of the degeneration can be expected with the appropriate chiropractic care.  After years of neglect you will reach phase three.  Complete fusion may immobilize the joint.  Nerve openings will become obstructed and can cause permanent nerve irritation and soft tissue degeneration.  At this stage, reversal is not possible but improvement of function is attainable.  You mentioned that you do not want to take medications.  Nothing but proper spinal care is going to correct the actual problem.  Drugs would be just the band-aid to cover up what is the real problem - Spinal Subluxation!

December 3, 2006:

Q:   I have a pain in my neck that won't go away, especially when I move into certain positions.  Do I have a pinched nerve?
- Brookfield

A:  Many patients come to our office because they think they have a “pinched nerve”.  Because of the way your spine is designed, the cause of abnormal spinal function comes from several sources.    The delicate tissues that surround the spine and nervous system are affected by emotional tensions, chemical reactions and physical stress.  The good news is that a “pinched nerve” is not as common as one would think.  A “pinched nerve”, known as a compressive lesion, affects only 10%-15% of the population.  With a compressive lesion one would typically present with numbness, burning, tingling or a pins and needles complaints.  What you most likely are experiencing is irritation of a nerve, known as a facilitative lesion.  This is caused from a nerve that is irritated from an increase or loss of spinal curve or malfunctioning joints.  The nerve tissue is actually stretched, twisted, rubbed or scraped from the abnormal joint structure, causing you pain!  Remember, pain is the last sign that something is wrong.  There could be a more serious problem.  So, if you have let it get to that stage, it is time to get it checked out before it is too late!

Q:  It seems like at this time of year my family keeps passing a cold back and forth.  It seems that nothing I do stops the inevitability of a cold once the process starts!  What can you do to help?
- New Milford

A:  Traditional medicine has no cure for the common cold and most drugs will not make the illness go away, they will just disguise the symptoms.  A fever or elevated temperature is the way for the body to utilize its defense mechanisms that help destroy infection.  Lowering a fever would actually reduce the body's defense against disease.  Chiropractors and other natural practitioners do not treat the symptoms.  We do however; help raise the body's natural resistance to infection.  Natural resistance is the only reason that colds and flu go away rather than last forever.  Chiropractors help increase resistance to disease by removing serious nerve interference to your proper body function.  Keeping your body working at its optimal potential keeps immunity high and could make the difference between a quick recovery and a lingering cold.

Q:   I look forward to reading your column every week but when my daughter asked me the other day, “What do Chiropractors do?”, and I was not sure how to properly answer her question.  Can you once again answer this?
-Jenn Schiel, Brookfield

A:  Chiropractors work with the bones and nerves of the spinal column.  Chiropractors spend years of highly specialized training in order to locate where misplaced spinal vertebrae are impinging the nerves.  After locating which vertebrae are impinging the nerves, the Chiropractor is able to re-align the misplaced vertebrae and thus release pressure on the nerves.  This is called a spinal adjustment.  Often people are unaware that they have these subluxations in their spine.  For example, you can feel when something happens to your skin (which is full of sensory nerves that send messages to your conscious brain) but not your liver (which has no sensory fibers going to the conscious brain.).  When nerves not connected to the conscious brain are damaged, the brain doesn't feel any pain even though the nerve damage may be causing disease or physical malfunction.  That is why vertebral subluxations are often referred to as “silent killers”.  Millions of people are walking around with subluxations but don't feel anything wrong in their backs or necks, so they think their nerves are fine and they never get their spines checked by a Chiropractor.  How wrong they are!

Q:  I had back surgery (fusion) 5 years ago. Over the last year I started to have low back pain with pain down my leg again. Is it true that there is a term coined “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”? Do I have another herniated disc?
- Brookfield

A:  I have heard of this term being used. When comparing a recurrent herniated disc to scar tissue formation similar low back and leg pain symptoms are typically observed. When there is a gradual onset of symptoms from one year post discectomy, it is more commonly a result of scar formation. If it is a more abrupt onset of pain at any interval, it is more commonly a herniated disc. 10%-40% of patients that undergo back surgery live with pain and have been unable to function as they did before their surgery. Chiropractic is the smart way to go after having a fusion! Chiropractors can take care of the joints of the spine above and below the affected area to help prevent unnecessary degeneration, which may have been the cause of your first herniation.

Q:   My daughter has chronic ear infections.  I do not want to take the same path that I went through with her older brother.  I have a friend that takes her children with her to the chiropractor and they all get regular Chiropractic adjustments.  She states that her children no longer suffer from ear infections!  What role does the Chiropractor play in evaluating and treating these children?
-Roxbury

A:  The Chiropractor's role is to determine if a child's inability to combat the infections is caused by irritation to the nerves in the spine.  The first problem may be that the nerve that innervates the inner ear is not getting the transmission it needs to create proper function.  The second problem may be that nerve endings are irritated and produce an abnormal tension on the small muscles in the neck.  This in return places unnecessary tension on the lymphatic drainage ducts, resulting in inadequate drainage from inside the ear.  Both instances do not allow the body to naturally correct the problem!  Until normal function is restored, the body does not have the ability to rid itself of the “chronic ear infections”.  Unless a child has an obvious problem like this, it can be difficult for parents to recognize when a child has a spinal problem.  Fortunately, you are getting an obvious sign early in your daughter's life, and you now have a means to take care of her!

Q:   My allergies have been acting up with the start of the changing of seasons. My friend that has always had allergy problems says that he breathes easier and feels great after he visits his Chiropractor.   How can Chiropractic help me?
- Brookfield

A:   A routine of regular chiropractic care allows the body to function at its best.  That is especially important if you suffer from allergies.  Allergic reactions can often be traced to nerve system dysfunction.  By releasing stress on the nervous system, chiropractic care allows the immune system to function at its optimum potential.  This means it will function more effectively which is something that all allergy sufferers need!  Correction of a basic cause of body malfunction helps improve the immune function!  Your runny eyes, irritation, redness, fullness in the sinuses and other common allergy symptoms have an effective natural means to be controlled!  As many patients say, it is like taking their first breath of fresh air!

Q:  I have been told that sports injuries and Chiropractic care go hand in hand. Can it be beneficial for my son who is on the football team as well as my daughter that swims?
-Michael Nahan New Milford , CT

A:  There are many good reasons why any athlete should seek a chiropractor. Not only will it allow for the body to function at its optimal levels, it is essential in the treatment and rehabilitation of a sports injury. The Chiropractic approach toward athletic injuries has demonstrated that everyone is better served by having the injured player promptly taken care of, thus obtaining recovery before irreparable damage is done. It is also observed that the cumulative effects of constant athletic small stresses, especially in growing children, over a long duration can give rise to the same difficulties as severe sudden stress! The opportunity to take care of patients that are usually healthy and physically fit is ideal for Chiropractors. Young athletes are often in the peak of their physical condition and motivation, which accounts for a rapid rate of recovery. While conditioning is emphasized in athletics, the motivation is frequently on winning. Prevention of injury is the motivation of chiropractic!

Q:   I am 30 weeks pregnant and have had terrible low back pain throughout my pregnancy.  The pain has become worse in the last two weeks and has now extended into my buttock and down my leg.  Is this a safe time for me to see a chiropractor or should I wait until the delivery?
-Dana Nuccio, New Milford

A:   Absolutely!!!  Not only is this a safe time to see your chiropractor it is essential.  This is a critical time for you and your growing child.  The benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy will positively affect you and your child for the rest of your lives.  As your center of gravity changes so do the stresses on you and your baby's spines.  Chiropractic care can help relieve these joint and nerve stresses to aid in reducing pain and improving nerve function in both mother and child.   Not only does it result in a more comfortable pregnancy, but also allows the joints of the pelvis to move freely which results in an easier delivery!  It is actually a common observation that birthing seems to be more comfortable for women who were under chiropractic care during their pregnancy. Furthermore, the postpartum return of the mother to prepartum health has also been shown to be expedited by chiropractic care.  Good Luck!

August 6, 2006:

Q:   I have been suffering fro m Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for years.  I have been to many doctors that have tried many treatments, and it always returns.  I have a friend that sees her Chiropractor for her Carpal Tunnel and has her pain under control!  Can you explain to me how you can help?
-Vicki Sneider  Brookfield

A:  The most common site of compression of the median nerve is at the wrist under the transverse carpal ligament.  Here it is accompanied by the flexor tendons of the fingers.  This is an extremely limited space!  With repetition of an aggravating act the median nerve is repeatedly traumatized at the point where it passes under the ligament.  When I address this condition, I loosen up the area surrounding the nerve, which will help to remove fibrous adhesions, wherever they may be along the nerve pathway.  The neck is often a problematic area for people suffering from this debilitating condition. Getting to the root of what is causing the condition and taking the pressure off of the nerves to allow proper nerve transmission is the ultimate goal of managing a patient with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

July 2006:

Q:   In July 2001 I had back surgery for a ruptured L5 disc. Even though my pain was reduced by 25%, I am now having pain above the original area. The surgeon told me that there was a chance this may happen, and it did! Now they want to do surgery for the new herniated disc and this means another fusion! Having run more than 45 miles per week for the past 10-12 years, my running has recently had to take a back seat. Many of my friends have recommended you, and I am hopeful that you can help me. Can Chiropractic help my back pain?
I want to avoid surgery!
-Richard Robinson, Brookfield , CT

A:  I had a patient a few months ago who had surgery of the L5 disc. His surgeon, as yours has suggested, also wanted to fuse the last two vertebrae in his back. The patient did his research and made an informed decision after visiting a neurologist, an orthopedic and a Chiropractor. He opted out of the second surgery and came to my clinic for non-surgical intervention. As do most of our disc patients, he responded well, and is now training for a half-marathon. We placed him on a program that enhances and maintains structural alignment of the lumbar vertebra above the fused L5 vertebra. I understand your frustration. We see many people that did not know that we were an option until after they have had a surgery. It is important to realize that each case is unique and case dependent.

June 2006:

Q:   I have been suffering from back pain and my friend suggested that I go and see her chiropractor. Why should I go to see a chiropractor and what should I expect?

A:  Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the understanding that good health depends upon a normal functioning nervous system. Chiropractors work with the bones and nerves of the spinal column. The nerves that extend from the spine extend to every part of your body. The Doctors spend years of highly specialized training in order to locate where spinal vertebrae are impinging nerves that travel throughout the body. A healthy spine is absolutely essential for proper nerve transmission. When you go to see the Doctor, an exam will be performed, and if necessary x-rays will be taken. You should realize that taking pressure off of the nerve that is being interfered with will help your body to function as it should, free of interference! A healthy spine is absolutely essential for everyone- newborns, children, adults and the elderly.
